What Spellbin asks for, and why

Spellbin works with no permissions at all. Drag files onto the cauldron in your Dock and they go, no questions asked. Everything on this page is optional and only adds extra ways to feed it, or a bit more theatre.

On first launch, Spellbin walks you through each permission and says what it is for before macOS shows its own prompt. Every step can be skipped, and you can run the walkthrough again any time from the Spellbin menu with Set Up Permissions…

Dropping files on the Dock icon

Needs: nothing. This is plain macOS drag and drop, the same as dropping a file on any app in your Dock.

Accessibility

What it enables: the flame rising above the Dock, and ⌘⌫ in Finder feeding the cauldron.

What it never does: read, record or store what you type, look inside other apps' windows, or send anything anywhere. Spellbin makes no network calls at all.

Without it: the flame plays inside the Dock icon instead, and ⌘⌫ in Finder goes to the normal Bin as usual.

Finder Automation

What it enables: knowing which files you meant when you press ⌘⌫.

When you press the shortcut, Spellbin asks Finder one question: which items are selected right now? That is the only thing it ever asks Finder. It does not use Finder to open, rename, move or read anything else.

Without it: ⌘⌫ behaves normally. You can still right-click files and choose Feed to Spellbin, which needs no permission.

Desktop, Documents and Downloads

macOS asks before any app can see files in these folders. Spellbin needs to see a file to put its thumbnail on the flame and move it to the Bin, so macOS may ask the first time you use ⌘⌫ on something in one of them. Files dropped on the Dock icon never need this.

Notifications

Achievement unlocks arrive as macOS notifications. macOS asks the first time one is earned. Say no and the achievements still unlock; you just find out in the Spellbin window instead.

How to switch them off

Open System Settings, then:

  1. Accessibility: Privacy & Security > Accessibility, then turn off Spellbin (or select it and press the minus button to remove it).
  2. Finder Automation: Privacy & Security > Automation, find Spellbin and turn off Finder.
  3. Folders: Privacy & Security > Files and Folders, find Spellbin and turn off any folder.
  4. Notifications: Notifications, then Spellbin.

Spellbin carries on working with whatever you leave switched on. Quit and reopen it after changing Accessibility so it notices.
