Quick answer: To clean up your Mac desktop, turn on Stacks so loose files sort themselves into piles, send screenshots to their own folder with Shift-Command-5, and tag whatever you want to keep. Then sort Downloads by Date Added and bin the oldest files. Ten minutes a week keeps the desktop tidy.
Nobody decides to fill their desktop. Screenshots land there by default. Then a PDF you meant to read and a file called "final v3" that is very much not final. One morning the wallpaper is a rumour.
You don't need a cleaner app to fix it. Everything below is built into macOS 27, and most of it is a setting you change once.
How do you use Stacks on a Mac desktop?
Click the desktop, then choose View > Use Stacks, or press Control-Command-0. Apple's stacks guide says you can also Control-click the desktop and choose Use Stacks. Every loose file goes into a pile with others of the same kind, so forty images become one stack.
Click a stack to open it out, and click the down arrow to fold it away again. On a trackpad, swipe left or right across a stack with two fingers to flick through what is inside without opening anything.
Group stacks by kind, date or tag
Mac desktop stacks group by kind unless you tell them otherwise. Click the desktop and choose View > Group Stacks By to switch to date or Finder tags. Date is the honest one: it shows how long that installer has been sitting there.
Stacks hide clutter. They don't delete anything, so treat them as a filing tray and empty it now and then.
How do you stop screenshots landing on the desktop?
Press Shift-Command-5, click Options, and pick a new location under "Save to". Apple's Screenshot guide lists preset locations there, plus Other Location for any folder you like. Apple confirms that screenshots save to the desktop by default, which explains a lot of desktops.
Make a Screenshots folder in Pictures or Documents first, then point Save to at it. Later screenshots go there instead.
How do you organise Mac desktop files with tags?
Select a file, then Control-click it and choose a coloured tag, or press Control-1 to Control-7. Apple's tags guide lists those shortcuts for your favourite tags, and Control-0 removes every tag from a file. A file or folder can carry more than one tag.
Tags help you organise a Mac desktop without filing anything properly. Tag what you want to keep, say green for "keep" and red for "deal with this", then click a tag in the Finder sidebar to see every file with it, wherever it lives. If you group stacks by tag, the desktop sorts itself along the same lines.
How do you sort out the Downloads folder?
Open Downloads in Finder and sort it by Date Added. Choose View > Show View Options and set Sort By, or click the Group button in the toolbar to group by date. Apple's Finder sorting guide notes that a folder stays sorted the way you left it, so you only do this once. If Downloads lives in your Dock as a stack, our guide to customising the Dock on a Mac shows how to change how it opens.
The oldest files sit together at one end. If you want a quick way to check them before they go, our post on fun ways to delete files on a Mac covers flicking through them with Quick Look.
Use a Smart Folder to find old files
A Smart Folder is a saved search. Apple's Smart Folder guide describes it as a list of files with something in common, and the list updates as files change. Choose File > New Smart Folder in Finder, use the Add button to set a rule such as the last date a file was opened, then save it to the sidebar.
Nothing is moved into a Smart Folder. It just shows you files from across the Mac that nobody has opened in a year, all in one place.
How do you hide desktop icons on a Mac?
Open System Settings > Desktop & Dock and switch off "On Desktop" under Show Items. Apple's Desktop & Dock settings guide lists it in the Desktop & Stage Manager section. The icons disappear from the wallpaper, but the files stay in your Desktop folder, so you can still open them from the Finder sidebar.
It is a good setting for screen sharing and a bad one for denial, because the mess is still there when you switch it back on. Once the desktop really is clear, there are a few ways to make your Mac look cosier too.
The wallpaper click setting
In the same section, the Show Desktop menu decides what clicking the wallpaper does. Choose "Always on Wallpaper Click" and every window slides aside to show your desktop items. Choose "Only in Stage Manager on Click" and it only happens in Stage Manager. Older versions of macOS called this "Click wallpaper to reveal desktop". If a stray click keeps sending every window flying, this is the setting to change.
Does iCloud change how you clean up your desktop?
Yes, if iCloud Drive's Desktop & Documents Folders setting is on. Apple's iCloud Drive guide explains that the setting stores your Desktop and Documents folders in iCloud Drive. It lives in System Settings under your name, then iCloud, then Drive. The files use your iCloud storage and appear on all your devices.
So a messy desktop is messy on every Mac you own, and tidying one tidies them all. When you bin something from the desktop, it goes from the others too.
If you turn the setting off, Apple says your files stay in iCloud Drive and macOS creates a new, empty Desktop folder in your home folder. Check there before you decide anything has gone missing.
A ten-minute desktop clean-up
- Turn on Stacks. Press Control-Command-0 on the desktop and group by date, so the oldest piles are obvious.
- Redirect screenshots. Press Shift-Command-5, open Options and save to a Screenshots folder from now on.
- Tag the keepers. Give anything you want to keep a tag with Control-1, and file it from the sidebar later.
- Sort Downloads by Date Added. Start at the oldest end and bin what you already used.
- Empty the Bin when you are sure. Our guide to what happens when you delete a file on a Mac explains what Put Back can still rescue before you do.
Then do it again next week, on the same day.
Something for the bit where you delete things
If you tidy your desktop on purpose, you care how your Mac looks. The deleting is still the dull bit.
Spellbin is our own small paid Mac app, a pixel-art cauldron that sits in the Dock beside the Bin. Drop a file on it and a green flame carrying the file's thumbnail rises out and dissolves. By default the file goes to the real Bin underneath, so Put Back still works. Every drop counts towards achievements that unlock new cauldron skins. It won't clean your Mac, find old files or free up space. It just makes the ten minutes more fun. Download Spellbin if that sounds like your kind of thing.
A clean desktop is ten minutes a week, done every week.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I clean up my Mac desktop quickly?
The quickest way to clean up a Mac desktop is to press Control-Command-0, which turns on Stacks and gathers every loose file into piles by kind. Choose View > Group Stacks By > Date to see the oldest piles first, then delete or file them. Stacks don't delete anything, so you still have to do that part.
Why do my screenshots go on my Mac desktop?
macOS saves screenshots to the desktop by default, according to Apple. To change it, press Shift-Command-5, click Options and choose a different location under "Save to", or pick Other Location for a folder of your own. Every screenshot you take after that goes to the new folder instead of the desktop.
Can I hide all the icons on my Mac desktop?
Yes. The Mac desktop icons can be hidden in System Settings > Desktop & Dock by switching off "On Desktop" under Show Items. The files stay in your Desktop folder, and you can still open them from the Finder sidebar. Switch the setting back on and the icons return exactly as they were.
What is "Click wallpaper to reveal desktop" on a Mac?
"Click wallpaper to reveal desktop" was the earlier name for the Show Desktop setting in Desktop & Dock. When it is set to "Always on Wallpaper Click", clicking the wallpaper slides every window aside. Set it to "Only in Stage Manager on Click" if you only want that to happen in Stage Manager.
Do Mac desktop stacks delete files?
No. Mac desktop stacks only group the files on your desktop into piles, by kind, date or Finder tag. The files stay in your Desktop folder exactly where they were. Turn Stacks off with View > Use Stacks and the icons spread back out. Deleting is still up to you.
Final Takeaways

- Move screenshots off the desktop through Shift-Command-5 > Options > Save to.
- Tag the keepers so you can find them from the sidebar without filing anything.
- Sort Downloads by Date Added and start binning from the oldest end.
- Check iCloud before you assume a file has vanished from the desktop.
